Today marks a pivotal milestone in Membrane’s journey. Since our inception in 2019, we have remained focused on one mission: to create software that simplifies the management of digital assets across key functions. The announcement that BitGo, one of the world’s leading custodians, will be adopting Membrane’s technology stack to power its Prime Brokerage build-out is a major testament to the credibility and impact of our platform.

Over the past year, numerous custodians have expanded their offerings, particularly in prime brokerage services, including access to balance sheets through borrowing and lending, bespoke financing, and margin trading. This shift is being driven by growing demand from clients seeking outright capital access, enhanced capital efficiency, and innovative ways to unlock native yield.

Building a regulated prime brokerage that clients can trust is no easy feat—many players have attempted it over the past few years with varying degrees of success. Historically, the missing piece was not just capital but the right technology to manage the entire workflow and operational processes. This is where Membrane was born. Initially focused on core settlement infrastructure, we have since expanded into a modular, API-first platform that includes a comprehensive loan management suite, derivatives management, and streamlined payment functions specifically designed for the complexities of digital assets. Our architecture is designed to meet every institution where they are, allowing firms to seamlessly integrate only the components they need while ensuring that historically siloed systems become interconnected.

Our technology will optimize how BitGo manages workflows and operations within its Prime Brokerage business. Last year, Membrane facilitated over $3 billion in loans for various clients, and during this time, we consistently heard from market participants that the industry still relies on cumbersome, manual, and inefficient processes. Many service providers struggle with executing even the simplest tasks—whether calculating margin, managing collateral, generating quarterly activity reports—leading to delays and operational bottlenecks.

By listening to these pain points, Membrane has developed a solution that directly addresses these inefficiencies, creating a platform that is not just a replacement for legacy systems, but an enhancement to any existing tech stack. Our recent SOC 2 certification further underscores our commitment to security and operational excellence, ensuring that institutions can rely on Membrane as a trusted partner as they scale.

We are excited that BitGo recognizes the value of Membrane, and we look forward to continuing our work with other prime brokers, custodians, and lenders seeking a technology-first approach to institutional digital asset management. While today we are focused on solving key inefficiencies in financing workflows, our vision extends further. Over time, we believe Membrane can become the foundational infrastructure to power inter-dealer markets, uniting crypto’s fragmented walled gardens and supporting healthy, more efficient market structures.

If your institution is navigating the complexities of prime brokerage or looking for technology that integrates seamlessly into existing operations, we’d love to connect.
